History of Lake Highlands Baptist Church
Many different people have entered the doors of Lake Highlands Baptist Church. Some of those have moved on to serve the Lord in various places, even in foreign countries, and others have gone to be with the Lord. In forty-nine years, the Lord has blessed and allowed His church, as well as its members, past and present to grow.
Lake Highlands Baptist Church was formed as a mission of Greenpond Baptist Church on June 30,1974. The first meeting of the church was in the Girl Scout Building on Middle Street in Sulphur Springs, Texas.
In the first services, Donny Berry, music director, led the singing and Linda Trammell, from Greenpond, played the piano. In that service, the first song sang was “Standing on the Promises”. In addition, there were twenty- three people present, eleven of which joined, on that first Sunday.
The first pastor of the church was a State Missionary, Brother Charles Burdett. He was sent by the State Missionary Association, who also helped to pay his salary. The Hopkins County BMA also assisted by giving Lake Highlands property on College Street, which has been purchased from Mr. J.C. McLaughlin prior to the church forming.
Under the leadership of Brother Burdett, the mission was formally organized as Lake Highlands Baptist Church on September 1,1974. Charter membership was extended through the month of September, resulting in a total of 34 members. Five charter members, James and Nell Allen, Donny and Faye Berry, and Glenna Hammargren are still active members of the church.
A church body had already formed, but their formal place of worship still needed to be built. The groundbreaking for a new church took place on September 29, 1974. The State Baptist Missionary Loan Association loaned the church $125,000 for the construction of the facilities.
On November 1,1974, Lake Highlands moved to another temporary home. The move took the church to the former Northside Baptist Church building on the corner of North Davis and Glover Street. Brother Charles Burdett resigned as pastor and Brother James Edge was called as pastor effective December 1,1974.
